6 Foods & Supplements to Support Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder & ADHD

1. Probiotics. The gut-brain connection. Did you know researchers have found an unhealthy gut as a causative factor of autism spectrum disorders and ADHD? Clinical studies have shown an elevated number of pathogenic bacteria known as clostridia and low numbers of healthy gut bacteria in children with ASD.  Most of the good bacteria create serotonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters responsible for regulating mood. Supplementing with probiotics and providing pre and probiotic foods can help balance and restore the microbiome creating improved behavioral and cognitive functioning and immune functioning.

The top two probiotic strains to incorporate for autism, sensory, ADHD and IBS are Lactobacillus reuteri and Bifidobacterium.

2. Omega 3’s.  Inflammation has been well-documented in children with ASD. Omega 3’s can help reduce inflammation in the GI tract and the brain, impacting neurotransmitters, mood, sleep, attention, and regression. It is important when choosing an omega 3 supplement that you are choosing one of high quality and that has been tested for heavy metals and pesticides.

3. Glutathione aids with detoxification and acts as a major antioxidant. Research has shown that children with ASD  have lower levels of glutathione when compared to children without ASD. Insufficient glutathione levels can lead to inflammation and cellular damage,  both of which are involved in the development of ASD. Typical dosage can vary based on needs, often supplementing 50mg per 30lbs wt.

4. Magnesium is responsible for over 300 enzymatic functions throughout our body. Many studies have shown children with ASD have reduced blood levels of magnesium.  Adequate magnesium intake via food and/or supplements can help increase melatonin and improve sleep, reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone), help regulate neurotransmitters for the central nervous system supporting relaxation and focus, and help improve bowel function.

5. Fiber. As previously mentioned, the gut microbiome can be unbalanced, leading to a host of digestive and neurological issues such as leaky gut, constipation, pain, and irritability. By increasing soluble fiber (which by the way is also a pre-biotic) we can improve the microbiome, improve bowel function, reduce irritability, and reduce inflammation.

6.  B6 is a major cofactor in the body’s production of serotonin and GABA, a neurotransmitter connected to mood, sensory, anxiety, hyperactivity, depression, and stress. Research has shown that the addition of B6 can significantly improve behavior, sleep, speech, learning, and social interaction. Vitamin B12 has also been shown to promote significant improvement in children with autism and ADHD. Some children with b12 deficiency may be misdiagnosed as ASD or ADHD. It is important to check for methylated forms when choosing b-vitamins or look into incorporating one of my favorite supplements, grass-fed beef liver to supply an array of nutrients vital for proper functioning.

Keep in mind, each indicudal is different and what their body needs or requires can vary. This can be a useful tool to use as a guide and continue your own research. I hope you found this information useful. To health and wellness.
